FOOD KING: AIRASIA HOLIDAY QUICKIES FT. DAVID FOSTER!

Friday, April 19, 2019

Hello, it’s Friday and that means another episode of… Food King! Today, we are thrilled to bring you something exciting and different – we are partnering the world’s best low-cost airline, AirAsia! We will also be showing you a plethora of delicious food from around the ASEAN region. Looking for a nice little weekend getaway? Well, AirAsia Holiday Quickies will certainly spice things up for you holiday junkies! Stay tuned right at the end to learn how. Oh wait. We’ve got another surprise for you!

If you are wondering why there’s only Dee and Aiken in this episode, here’s why. We have a very special guest with us today. And no, it’s not Ryan. Let’s welcome, 16-time Grammy Award winner, musician, record producer, composer, songwriter, arranger, and of course, AirAsia’s brand ambassador, Mr David Foster! Yessss!!

We all know David Foster have a great ear for music. But does he have a great taste for food too? Today we shall put him to the test by having a Food King Taste Test just for him! David Foster will be trying 6 delightful dishes from 6 different countries from the ASEAN region. He will then have 2 choices to choose from. Now for the most dangerous catch… the forfeit! If David ends up with an even number score, Dee has to do the forfeit. Aiken loses if it’s an odd number. The loser will have to sing ‘I Have Nothing’, the classic song David co-wrote and produced for Whitney Houston! This feels like Asia’s Got Talent right here in Singapore already. We are all hyped up and ready to go. Let’s start with our quickies shall we!

First up for our dish of the day is Pho. Pronounced as “fuh,” this popular food is a Vietnamese soup that is normally made with a bone-beef broth, vermicelli, bean sprouts and thinly sliced beef. Pho is made with rice noodles and is not to be confused with Japanese ramen, which is usually made with wheat noodles. Will David be confused? Let’s put him to the test.

We wait eagerly for his verdict. Will he like it?

In deep thoughts…

Oh no. David is confused! It’s not because of the Pho though. Dee and Aiken is calling each other Bakso and it sounds like a bad word to David. Oppsy!

Yesss. He got this one right. Well done David!

Vietnam is one of the places that David has never been to. It is also a destination he really wishes to perform at. Unfortunately, there’s no invitation so far. So if you’re watching from Vietnam, please invite David Foster to your lovely country. He really loves your Pho too! Vietnam’s not so pho away after all ya’know… #badpunsintended

Next up is our beloved Mee Goreng Mamak from Malaysia. This unique fried noodles dish is commonly found in ‘mamak’ eateries throughout Malaysia and Singapore. One of the most popular cities in Malaysia that serves mee goreng mamak is Penang. These irresistible noodles are known for its sweet and spicy flavours with some nutty taste to it. Let’s hope this can spice David up a bit.

Hmmm… This doesn’t look familiar. Why is the color of this dish so strange and red?

My answer is….

Ding! You are correct! 2 Points!

Finally to our favorite comfort food, Chicken Rice! Considered one of Singapore’s national dishes, this delicious food excels because of its simplicity in its ingredients – poached chicken on fragrant white rice, served with dark soy sauce and specially-made chilli with garlic. Fun Fact: The recipe and techniques to make chicken rice came to Singapore through a mix of Hainanese and Cantonese cultures. And it has made it to the flight menus of AirAsia. Yums!

I’m enjoying this so much!

This is gonna be chicken feed…

And he got it right once again. David’s on a roll!

Now for the swag pose. Looking good huh.

How are you, welcome to Thailand! Ladddyyy Gentlemen! Laddieee Gentlemen! Sawadikup, today we are going to try the Pad Thai. Thailand’s national dish is made up of rice noodles stir-fried with tofu, eggs, and a sauce made with tamarind paste, fish sauce, dried shrimp, garlic, chilli and palm sugar. Pad Thai is characterized by its rich, vibrant colors and flavours.

Savoring the flavours from the Land of Smiles.

Will David guess right on the 4th try?

Yes there’s no doubt about that! Well played, well played. But Aiken cheated by deliberately using his awesome Thai accent. No points for you Aiken. Bad boy! #Tryharder

From the land of the ‘Ascending Dragon’ to the ‘Land of Smiles’, we are now trying a popular dish from the largest country in Southeast Asia. Soto ayam, an Indonesian version of chicken soup, is a clear herbal broth brightened by fresh turmeric and herbs, with yellow or skinny rice noodles buried in the bowl. It is usually served with a boiled egg, deep-fried potato, fried shallots, celery leaves and herbs. A truly warm and hearty meal for all.

Oh no… David is in a fix. Can he guess it right this time round?

Wait a minute. He ain’t in a dilemma… David wants to lose the next 2 rounds on purpose so he can hear Aiken sing! Good Lord!

Gotcha Aiken! You’re gonna lose!

Our last dish in this exciting Food King Taste Test will be the Chicken Adobo from the Philippines. Chicken Adobo is a type of Filipino chicken stew that involves meat, seafood, or vegetables marinated in vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, and black peppercorns, which is browned in oil, and simmered in the marinade. The dish gained popularity because of its delicious taste and ease in preparation.

Comment of the day: ‘I don’t know what this is’. – David Foster

Will Aiken inexplicably lose? Or will he have the last laugh? The wait is intense…

Let’s make Aiken lose shall we! Yes? Yesssss! Aiken is robbed! ‘Please don’t, I’m sweating, I’m so nervous… Noooooo!’ – Poor Aiken.

Omg David guessed wrong. And that means the forfeit goes to Aiken! David’s grinning with delight and is all hyped up. ‘But why is no one hi-fiving me?’ #Thatsawkward.

Well well, standby for another plot twist. The tables has turned – David wants Aiken and Dee to sing together! Just like Whitney, Barbra and Celine. What?!

Hi everybody, welcome to Asia’s Got Talent. Where we uncover hidden gems from all over Asia! In our first audition of the day, we have two unknowns from Singapore. Let’s put our hands together to welcome… Erm… Food King Host?!

‘You’re the host and I’m your judge. Now you sing. The stage is yours. Good luck!’

*Gulp!*

Aiken finally sings!

‘Cause I’ll never have any mountains like Dee’s’. Wait, what?!

Wow, look at that passion! Aiken’s hitting all the high notes alright!

Come fly away with me on AirAsia… David Foster’s not included.

Goodness, he’s enjoying it. Let’s sing along David! If i don’t have…..

Foooooood….

So what will his verdict be? Will Food King Host be Asia’s next big thing?

Yes they did it. Well done guys! You’re gonna be famous!
